Is Masturbation Haram in Islam?

According to the majority of Islamic scholars, masturbation for both men and women is haram (forbidden) in Islam. This ruling is based on evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah, as well as the general Islamic principle of guarding chastity.

Evidence from the Qur’an

Imam al-Shafi‘i and many other scholars stated that masturbation is forbidden based on Allah’s words (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who guard their chastity, except with their wives or those whom their right hands possess, for then they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors.”
(Al-Mu’minun 23:5–7)

These verses make it clear that sexual fulfillment is only permitted within lawful marriage. Seeking pleasure outside this framework—including masturbation—is described as transgression.

Another verse often cited is:

“And let those who cannot afford marriage keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them from His bounty.”
(An-Nur 24:33)

This verse commands patience and self-restraint for those unable to marry, rather than allowing alternative sexual outlets.

Evidence from the Sunnah

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O young people, whoever among you can afford marriage, let him marry, for it helps lower the gaze and guard chastity. Whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for it will diminish desire.”
(Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

If masturbation were permissible, the Prophet ﷺ would have mentioned it as an easier option. Instead, he advised fasting, which shows that self-control—not self-stimulation—is the correct path.

Advice on Overcoming Masturbation

Islam does not only prohibit wrongdoing; it also provides practical guidance to overcome it:

  1. Sincere intention – Seek to quit out of obedience to Allah and fear of His displeasure.

  2. Marriage when possible – It is the strongest and most effective solution.

  3. Stay busy – Productive use of time reduces temptation.

  4. Lower the gaze – Avoid anything that triggers desire, such as inappropriate images or media.

  5. Increase worship and knowledge – Prayer, Qur’an, and learning strengthen self-control.

  6. Avoid isolation – Being alone for long periods increases temptation.

  7. Fast regularly – As recommended by the Prophet ﷺ, fasting helps control desires.

  8. Strengthen patience and willpower – Resisting temptation becomes easier with persistence.

  9. Follow the Sunnah before sleep – Supplications, sleeping on the right side, and proper manners help protect one spiritually.

  10. Repent immediately if one slips – Turn to Allah with sincerity, do good deeds, and never despair of His mercy.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will make him chaste; whoever is patient, Allah will grant him patience. And no one has been given anything better than patience.”
(Al-Bukhari)

Final Reminder

Allah is Most Merciful and always accepts sincere repentance. Struggling with temptation does not make a person evil; persisting without repentance does. Turning back to Allah with hope, effort, and patience is the path to purification and peace.

And Allah knows best.
