The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best example of kindness, mercy, and good character in family life. His treatment of his wives reflects love, respect, patience, and justice.
Kindness, Care, and Consideration
The Prophet ﷺ treated his wives gently and with deep respect. Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when she began menstruation while sharing a blanket with the Prophet ﷺ, he reassured her and invited her to remain with him. This shows his compassion and understanding.
He also showed affection in lawful ways, such as kissing his wives while fasting, and he shared daily life with them in simplicity and closeness.
Respecting Feelings and Interests
‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ stood patiently while she watched the Abyssinians playing in the mosque, covering her with his cloak until she was satisfied. This shows how he respected her feelings and allowed harmless enjoyment.
He would also speak with his wife after night prayers if she was awake, showing attentiveness and emotional closeness.
Never Harming One’s Wife
Islam strictly forbids harming others, especially one’s spouse. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm.”
In his Farewell Sermon, the Prophet ﷺ strongly emphasized kindness to women, reminding men that women have rights to proper food, clothing, and respectful treatment. Any form of harsh or severe harm is prohibited.
Mutual Rights and Responsibilities in Marriage
Islam teaches balance in marriage. Allah states that both husband and wife have rights over one another, though the husband has a greater responsibility as protector and provider.
The husband’s rights include:
-
Obedience in what is lawful
-
Respect for household boundaries
-
Marital cooperation
-
Not allowing into the home those he dislikes
-
Not leaving the home without permission
The wife’s duties are paired with the husband’s obligations to provide, protect, teach, and treat her well.
Discipline and Responsibility
Islam allows gentle discipline only as a last resort, within strict limits, and never with severity or harm. The goal is correction and family stability, not punishment or abuse.
Serving One Another with Good Character
Scholars explained that a wife’s service to her husband should be according to what is customary and reasonable, varying by culture and ability. Likewise, the husband must act with kindness, patience, and fairness.
Good Treatment Is a Shared Duty
Allah commands good companionship between spouses. Just as a wife is required to respect her husband, she has the right to kind treatment, protection from harm, and a dignified life.
Conclusion
The marriage of the Prophet ﷺ was built on mercy, respect, and balance. His example teaches that authority comes with responsibility, and that true leadership in the family is shown through kindness, justice, and care.
And Allah knows best.
