A Dua Away by Dr. Omar Suleiman

The life and death of a believer belong to Allah alone. We live for His sake and strive toward a good ending and the eternal reward of Paradise. Among the signs of the Day of Judgment is that a person will pass by a grave and wish to be in it—not out of longing to meet Allah, but as an escape from the hardships of worldly life. Others, however, remain deeply attached to this world, consumed by their love for it and neglectful in preparing for the Hereafter.

The Prophet ﷺ taught many supplications that orient the believer toward the afterlife and encourage deeds that lead to a righteous end and everlasting success. This particular duʿāʾ emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and avoiding sin, as righteous actions lead to Paradise, while persistent sin may result in divine punishment.

The supplication also highlights love and care for the poor, recognizing that many of the greatest acts of worship involve serving and uplifting those in need. Notably, the final portion of the duʿāʾ asks Allah to take one’s life if a severe trial is about to afflict one’s people—specifically trials that endanger faith. This reflects the understanding that dying upon righteousness is better than surviving a trial that leads to the loss of faith. However, trials that draw a believer closer to Allah are ultimately beneficial and serve as a means of spiritual growth and purification.
